"Shonda always wanted to be a journalist and never found the door to private companies, so, Being the Ponder she is, she built her own door, had a set of keys made so door could open both directions, and handed the keys to the public and said come in and feel welcome and warm, for God visits often. The law protects here, and I am here to hear your demands. PROUD OF MY LITTLE GIRL

Supreme Court considers abortion mandate again

Source: Baptist Press

May 6, 2020

For the third consecutive day, the justices heard oral arguments by means of a telephone conference because of restrictions brought on by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The religious freedom case was among 10 in which the high court postponed oral arguments from late March and April

Wait for it! Watch and see if it isn't true. All these kids who are home-schooling right now are gonna graduate, have kids of their own, and then decide whether or not to home-school their children. They are gonna decide whether it was better for them to learn at home or not, and is it something they will prefer for their own kids to have.

We are going to see a lot more attention placed on distance learning and the government is going to be scrambling to come up with ways to regulate home-schooling more!

Child’s Public School Apocalypse

Source: The American Conservative

May 6, 2020

Anyway, if you read Veronique Mintz’s essay, you’ll see that the conclusions she has drawn are completely unrealistic, and dodge the real social and pedagogical issues her dilemma raises. The best thing for her to do is to convince her parents to let her do “distance learning.” Yes, she will miss out on the “socialization” that occurs in a standard high school. This is a feature, not a bug! The socialization she’s now getting is teaching her anger and cynicism. The main problem is not the system; it’s society and culture. I wonder how many more Veronique Mintzes there are who, thanks to the lockdown, are now having the scales fall from their eyes about their schooling.

Larson: Social Security Expansion is Needed to Help the Most Vulnerable

Source: U.S. Representative John B. Larson (D-CT, 1st)

May 4, 2020

“Social Security is our nation’s number one anti-poverty program and the number one lifeline for seniors. Seniors are the most vulnerable to this virus, and among them hits minorities disproportionally. This demands a 80+ years proven remedy embraced by Democratic and Republican Presidents: expanding Social Security! During a crisis Americans want certainty and clarity. Social Security provides that certainty, it has never missed payment. President Trump needs to channel what Presidents Reagan and Eisenhower understood. They recognized that it was essential to health of the nation to strengthen Social Security and took action. We must do the same today. A payroll tax cut may seem appealing but would actually weaken Social Security and greatly benefit corporations, while hurting those who need its benefits the most. We must act now and pass an emergency plan to expand Social Security and the needed relief it provides,” said Larson.

May 5, 2020

“The coronavirus is having a devastating impact on our senior community and their families,” said Lamb.  “Nowhere has that impact been felt more painfully than at the Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Beaver County.  The current CMS inspection cycle of 9-15 months is inadequate to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19.  We need to ensure that we are doing everything we can to protect our seniors, including increasing the frequency and intensity of inspections.”

Dallas woman gets 7 days in jail for refusing to close her hair salon during stay-at-home orders

Source: CBS

May 5, 2020

"I have much respect for this court and laws. I have never been in this position before and it's not someplace that I want to be," Luther responded, according to CBS Dallas Fort Worth. "But I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I'm selfish because feeding my kids — is not selfish. I have hair stylists that are going hungry because they'd rather feed their kids. So sir, if you think the law is more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision but I am not going to shut the salon."

Recently, on Facebook, Shonda Ponder (that's me) asked, "I'm confused. Why are farmers euthenizing the animals if there is a meat shortage?"

Someone sent us this article:

Op-ed: Don’t Blame Farmers Who Have to Euthanize Their Animals. Blame the Companies They Work For.

Source: Civil Eats

April 30, 2020

For decades, farmers and their advocates have warned us of the inherent weaknesses in our food system. Now, in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, those weaknesses are laid bare: Big Ag has built a food system house of cards that is collapsing on the farmers who feed us.

The Reasons for Plagues

Source: God Inspires

May 2, 2020

The United States has recently entered into a time of petty persecutions for prayer. Schools have disallowed prayer, public events have omitted prayer out of fear of offending those who don't. Nativity sets in public places have been condemned. Bakers who choose to follow Christian guidelines have been sued. Is it surprising, then, that God would send a plague to visit us?

Being from Texas, (and proud of it) I was in agreement when I saw the meme on Facebook about Blue Bell:

"People are shocked Texas wants to open back up.
Let me try to explain it:

5 years ago, Blue Bell literally killed us with their contaminated ice cream and all we cared about was when we would get our next 1/2 gallon.

It's what we do."

Well, today I came across this, from Blue Bell Creameries:

Blue Bell Creameries announces agreement with Department of Justice on 2015 recall

Source: Blue Bell Creameries

May 1, 2020

Today we are a new, different and better Blue Bell. Our agreement with the government involves events that took place five years ago before we shut down and revamped our production facilities and procedures. Since resuming production in the summer of 2015, we test our ice cream and deliver it to stores only after independent tests confirm it is safe.

Conservative Activists Return to Michigan's Capitol as Lawmakers Authorize Lawsuit Challenging Governor's Powers

Source: Time

April 30, 2020

Whitmer wanted lawmakers to extend her emergency declaration by 28 days. It expires late Thursday. But at the same time, she believes she has other powers to respond to the crisis and does not need a legislatively-approved extension except to ensure that health care workers would continue to have special legal protections. She has said the state of emergency will continue regardless.
