"Shonda always wanted to be a journalist and never found the door to private companies, so, Being the Ponder she is, she built her own door, had a set of keys made so door could open both directions, and handed the keys to the public and said come in and feel welcome and warm, for God visits often. The law protects here, and I am here to hear your demands. PROUD OF MY LITTLE GIRL

Kinzinger Introduces Legislation to Combat Social Media Scams

Source: U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL, 16th)

April 23, 2020

By introducing these two bills, I hope to draw attention to the very real problem at hand and encourage my colleagues to join me in this effort. H.R. 6586 will have the Federal Trade Commission institute a rule that requires more action from social media companies to field and investigate complaints about deceptive accounts or other fraudulent activity on their platforms. This measure also holds individuals accountable if they continually make complaints or file reports in bad faith, or if they falsely accuse individuals of deceptive behavior. The second bill, H.R. 6587, goes after the scammers and bad actors by creating criminal penalties for the individuals who create these deceptive accounts and engage in the fraudulent behavior. It’s important that we’re protecting consumers of the social media platforms, and holding perpetrators of malign behavior accountable.

King: "Pork Producers want to feed the world, they don't want to bury a product."

Source: U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA, 4th)

April 29, 2020

At the invitation of House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN), Congressman King joined a press conference held in Worthington, Minnesota this afternoon. The press conference focused on the processing plant closure crisis in the pork industry and the horrible situation in which producers are being forced to euthanize healthy, market ready hogs.

King Calls for Forward-Looking Funding to Support Public Health Departments, Boost Public Health Preparedness

Source: Senator Angus S. King Jr. (I-ME)

April 29, 2020

“More than ever, it is critical to have a strong national public health surveillance system that detects and facilitates responses to emerging, and existing, health threats. The exchange of public health data from health care providers to public health officials is critical to a coordinated, timely, and effective response—and can save lives,” the Senators wrote. “Funding dedicated to a data modernization initiative would allow CDC, state, local, tribal, and territorial health departments to move from sluggish, manual, paper-based data collection to seamless, automated, and secure IT systems. Similarly, the funding would allow CDC to invest in hiring a workforce that is trained to handle epidemiological data and IT systems… if the United States fails to once again invest in a well-rounded enterprise data collection system, our nation will be set up for yet another deadly epidemic or pandemic.”

Congressman Kim Calls White House Testing ‘Plan’ Insufficient to Reopen Economy

Source: U.S. Representative Andy Kim (D-NJ, 3rd)

April 27, 2020

“This blueprint isn’t a plan to aggressively increase testing so we can reopen our economy, it’s the passing of the buck to our state and county officials who are already stretched to the limit,” said Congressman Kim. “This is a national crisis and we need national leadership. A month ago, I asked FEMA to step up and add the testing capacity we need for South Jersey. That request was shot down by the White House. The legislation we passed last week mandated the Administration to come up with a real plan to scale testing to a point where we can safely reopen our economy and put people back to work; I hope they take that effort seriously and look forward to seeing a real path to helping the people who need it most.”

Kilmer Joins Federal Lawmakers Pushing for Strong Testing System in Washington State, Nationwide

Source: U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA, 6th)

April 28, 2020

“Public health officials in Washington state and across the country require a strong testing system to get the information they need to determine when our states and communities can begin eventual reductions in social distancing efforts without compromising public health,” the lawmakers wrote. “As communities across the country need accurate information to make decisions about next steps, not having a coordinated evidence-based testing strategy is a recipe for disaster.”

April 28, 2020

“The president must come to Congress before starting a war, period,” said Rep. Khanna, Vice-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. “Between the uncertainty surrounding Kim Jung Un’s health and the reports of ‘contingency plans’ in place if there were to be a change in leadership, American foreign policy must prioritize a diplomatic approach toward achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula. The current state of world affairs only underlies the importance of Congress reclaiming its constitutional authority over matter of war and pace. I’m proud to partner again with Senator Markey on this effort to prevent an unconstitutional war in North Korea.”

April 28, 2020

“No one should be forced to choose between their health and their voice in this democracy,” said Congressman Kennedy. “Ballots should be mailed to every single voter in this state so that everyone in our Commonwealth can be heard. Every day we delay enacting statewide – and nationwide – vote-by-mail is another day that democracy will be deferred.”

Reps. Katko, Schneider, Cox, King, DeGette Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Make States and Local Governments Eligible for Emergency Paid Leave Tax Credits

Source: U.S. Representative John Katko (R-NY, 24th)

April 29, 2020

“Local governments have been at the forefront of our nation’s effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, providing critical services to those in-need, supporting our hospital and healthcare providers, and relaying important information to keep our communities safe and healthy. However, with an economic crisis slashing revenue for many local governments, our county governments and municipalities are suffering – and need relief now.  That’s why I am proud to join Reps. Schneider, Cox, King, and DeGette in introducing bipartisan legislation to make state and local governments eligible for emergency paid family and sick leave payroll tax credits. Providing these payroll tax credits to offset paid leave expenses will ensure local and state governments are able to protect employees and continue their work to serve our nation during this crisis,” said Rep. Katko.

House Judiciary Members Seek Answers from ATF Regarding the Surge of Ghost Guns During COVID-19 Pandemic

Source: Judiciary Committee

April 24, 2020

In the letter, the members wrote, “While the surge in firearm sales from federally licensed dealers has received nationwide attention, at least 16 companies that sell ghost gun kits have reported order backlogs and shipping delays due to overwhelming demand. The uptick in sales of ghost gun kits and parts have received substantially less notice, even though the increase in sales of ghost guns poses a direct threat to public safety and law enforcement… Because the proliferation of ghost guns is a serious problem, we write to request…information and documentation to probe how the ATF is monitoring, overseeing, and regulating the sale of ghost gun kits and unfinished frames and receivers, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Judicial Watch: Emails Show Extensive Communications Between Senior Defense Official and Columnist Who Published Leaked Info on Flynn Calls with Russian Ambassador

Source: Judicial Watch

April 27, 2020

Lawyers for Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn alleged in a November 1, 2019, court filing that Baker “is believed to be the person who illegally leaked” to Ignatius the transcripts of Flynn’s December 29, 2016, telephone calls with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak. The Washington Post published Ignatius’ account of the calls on January 12, 2017, setting in motion a chain of events that lead to Flynn’s February 13, 2017, firing as National Security Advisor and subsequent prosecution for making false statements to the FBI about the calls. U.S. Attorney John Durham is reportedly investigating the leak of information targeting Flynn.

Senators Doug Jones and Tom Cotton Applaud Treasury’s Adoption of Their Proposal to Use Debit Cards to Disburse COVID Relief Payments

Source: Senator Doug Jones (D-AL)

April 27, 2020

“We are very pleased that the Administration will implement our suggestion to use prepaid debit cards to make coronavirus relief payments to eligible Americans. Using debit cards instead of paper checks will be a faster, safer way to distribute payments for struggling American families trying to social distance, pay the bills, and navigate life during this pandemic.”

Congressman Johnson Urges FCC and Other Federal Agencies to Inform Low-Income Families They Can Receive Broadband Services

Source: U.S. Representative Henry C. (Hank) Johnson, Jr. (D-GA, 4th)

April 28, 2020

“Non-essential businesses and schools have closed across the country to limit the spread of the coronavirus, leaving families to rely on the internet now more than ever to access public benefits, search for employment, learn from home, or access telehealth services. The need is greatest among low-income households forced to stretch limited resources to try to keep up with monthly expenses and put food on the table during the public health crisis.  For these vulnerable populations, the FCC’s Lifeline program can help struggling families afford basic internet and telephone connectivity at a time when they need it most – but only if they know about it,” the lawmakers wrote.

“During these challenging times, people turn to their faith to help them navigate through this period of great uncertainty around the world,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “This year, Muslims around the world will be making adjustments as they observe Ramadan and practice social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. While this pandemic prevents Muslims and other religious faiths from physically gathering together, it presents an opportunity to create innovative ways to congregate, worship, and celebrate.”

April 29, 2020

“South Dakota farmers and ranchers are getting battered out there,” said Johnson. “It’s imperative our supply chains remain open for both the American people and our producers. I’m encouraged the president and USDA are working to ensure our supply chains remain open both safely and swiftly. Our supply chains should continue to carry many of these practices into the future so we can ensure our economy isn’t faced with uncertainty down the road.”
