"Shonda always wanted to be a journalist and never found the door to private companies, so, Being the Ponder she is, she built her own door, had a set of keys made so door could open both directions, and handed the keys to the public and said come in and feel welcome and warm, for God visits often. Source: U.S. Representative Bill Hulzinga (R-MI, 2nd)

April 23, 2020

Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) spoke on the House floor in support of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. This bipartisan measure which will support small business, increase testing, and provide additional funding to hospitals passed the House by a vote of 388 to 5 with one member voting present.

HUDSON COSPONSORS MILITARY FAMILY READINESS LEGISLATION

Source: U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC, 8th)

April 21, 2020

“As Fort Bragg’s Congressman, I understand that the strength of our warfighters depends on not only the training and resources we provide them, but also the support we provide to their families,” said Rep. Hudson. “This legislation directly addresses many of the concerns I've heard from Fort Bragg families including reforms to strengthen family readiness initiatives such as the Exceptional Family Member Program which provides access to health care and special needs education. As a champion of opioid epidemic legislation, I am also proud this bill requires the Department of Defense to develop a policy to address opioid abuse.”

Hoyer Statement on Passage of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act

Source: U.S. Representative Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD, 5th)

April 23, 2020

"The passage of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act will provide needed help to small businesses in the Fifth District that are struggling to survive during this pandemic, and to their employees who are having trouble making ends meet. This bill also provides additional funding to expand testing and to help hospitals and health care providers fight the coronavirus. This legislation is an important step, but more must be done to help Marylanders and local governments that are struggling financially. I am very disappointed this legislation did not include a fix to provide the District of Columbia with critically needed funds to fight the coronavirus in our region. NEAL STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF EMERGENCY INTERIM FUNDING PACKAGE

Source: House Committee on Ways and Means

April 23, 2020

“Today, we passed urgent legislation that will provide much-needed assistance to the smallest of small businesses and frontline health care workers. Democrats fought to transform this bill from a haphazard fix for only some businesses to a bill grounded in addressing the deadly public health crisis that is ravaging our communities. I supported this bill, even though it does not come close to fully addressing the staggering needs of the American people.

CHAIRMAN TAKANO CALLS FOR TAX FIX, FULL AUTOMATIC COVID-19 STIMULUS CHECKS FOR VULNERABLE VETERAN FAMILIES

Source: House Committee on Veterans Affairs

April 22, 2020

“Without a plan to ensure veterans and their families receive their entire stimulus payment automatically, vulnerable families will be at risk. It is disabled veterans with dependents who will miss out on funds that are owed to them, making it more difficult to support and care for their families,” said Chairman Takano. “I urge VA to do whatever it can to identify veterans with dependents and to ensure that Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service have the information they need to automatically provide full stimulus payments to everyone who is owed them.”

Chairs DeFazio and Titus Press GSA for Answers Amid Reports Trump’s DC Hotel is Seeking Rent Relief from Federal Taxpayers

Source: House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure

April 23, 2020

In their letter, Chairs DeFazio and Titus wrote: “We are writing in order to get assurances from you that GSA will not give preferential treatment to President Trump’s business in light of the many conflict of interest issues we have been raising since before the start of the Trump administration. In addition, any Federal financial benefits to the Trump International Hotel may be in violation of the Emoluments Clauses of the U.S. Constitution.”

Chairwoman Maloney Issues Floor Statement in Support of Interim Emergency Coronavirus Relief Package

Source: House Committee on Oversight and Governmental Reform

April 23, 2020

I’m glad that $60 billion is being set aside for community banks, credit unions, minority banks, and CDFIs, and as the Chairwoman of the Oversight Committee, I promise that I will watch this $60 billion like a hawk to make sure that it goes to the lenders — and the communities — that we intended.

Chair Grijalva on Nuclear Fuel Working Group Report: Trump Admin Wants Uranium Mining Near Grand Canyon With No Public Scrutiny

Source: House Committee on Natural Resources

April 23, 2020

“The Trump administration wants uranium mining near the Grand Canyon without even minimal public oversight, and it doesn’t care about the consequences. Today’s report is a roadmap for giving the uranium mining industry everything it wants without any scrutiny. If these recommendations are followed, we’ll pay a terrible environmental and public health price – and there won’t be any public discussion about whether we need to change course. Anyone who wants to spin this as anything other than a massive industry giveaway has the burden of proof on them, and any excuse they offer won’t stack up to the plain text of today’s absurd report.”

Schiff, Nadler Call for Inspector General to Review Attorney General Barr’s Comments on Atkinson Firing

Source: House Committee on Intelligence

April 20, 2020

During the interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Barr blatantly mischaracterized Mr. Atkinson’s conduct and DOJ’s own actions relating to the complaint filed last summer by an Intelligence Community whistleblower and misrepresented DOJ’s legal opinion concerning the whistleblower complaint. This continues a pattern of misrepresentations and false allegations of misconduct by others in order to defend the President’s own misconduct that a federal district court judge called “misleading.”

Chairman Scott Statement on House Passage of Interim COVID-19 Response Bill

Source: House Committee on Education and the Workforce

April 23, 2020

“The interim funding legislation passed by the House today will provide urgent relief to vulnerable small businesses and their workers. Thanks to the efforts of Democratic leadership, this funding package sets aside $60 billion for small lenders, such as community-based banks and credit unions, so that small businesses without banking relationships can still access much-needed relief funds. House Budget Committee Examines Tying Extension of COVID-19 Relief to Economic Conditions

Source: House Committee on the Budget

April 22, 2020

“As Congress works to address both the public health crisis and economic fallout, the American people need to know that the federal government will not arbitrarily cut off the critical relief they are counting on to get by,” said House Budget Chairman John Yarmuth (KY-03). “Withdrawing support too soon would not only stymie recovery efforts, it would put the well-being of the American people at risk. To benefit fully from the historic Families First and CARES Act legislation – and to avoid repeating the mistakes of previous recovery efforts – Congress must stand by America's families until a strong recovery is underway.”

Peterson Statement on Final Navigable Waters Protection Rule

Source: House Committee on Agriculture

April 21, 2020

“Since the first inception of this rule, I’ve worked to secure changes to it with the goal of protecting clean water without making it harder for farmers and ranchers to operate,” said Peterson. “I’m encouraged that the new rule takes steps to protect lakes, ponds, streams, and other tributaries, while providing that certainty to our ag producers.”

Houlahan, Bera, Brooks, Foster Outline Plan To Support National Testing Strategy

Source: U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA, 6th)

April 22, 2020

“To safely reopen our country, we need to swiftly implement a comprehensive national testing strategy,” said Houlahan. “In order to execute said strategy, we need a team of dedicated civil servants who can carry out testing, contact tracing, and more. That is why I, along with a bipartisan coalition, am calling for the creation of a National Public Health Corps to help aid our frontline health care workers on the ground across the country. As an AmeriCorps member and veteran, I know what it takes to serve this country, and I know how hard those on the front lines are working to mitigate the spread of this pandemic. We need to do everything in our power to support their efforts. I urge the Administration to move expediently in creating this vital National Public Health Corps.”

Therefore, it is vital that small gaming operators be allowed to participate in the Paycheck Protection Program,” Congressman Horsford said. “Given these dire and unprecedented times due to COVID-19, I urge the Small Business Committee to provide much needed relief for Nevada small gaming operators as part of the next CARES package.”

Rep. Horn Introduces Bipartisan Bill To Fund Purchase of Crude Oil for Strategic Petroleum Reserve

Source: U.S. Representative Kendra Horn (D-OK, 5th)

April 21, 2020

“Right now, Oklahomans are facing a historic health and economic crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and made worse by the destabilization of energy markets,” said Congresswoman Kendra Horn. “As workers in the oil and gas industry struggle to make ends meet, our nation is still counting on them to power hospitals and essential services. We must take action now to help an industry that supports nearly a fifth of our state’s workforce and fuels our nation’s economy. Today’s bipartisan bill does just that by providing resources to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.”

Legal battles loom across the U.S. as businesses hit by pandemic shutdown sue insurers

Source: Anchorage Daily News

April 23, 2020

A once-bustling bar and grill tucked below a Michigan Avenue overpass famously inspired a “Saturday Night Live” skit starring John Belushi and Bill Murray. But the money the Billy Goat Tavern is losing during the coronavirus outbreak is no joke. The tavern and millions of other shuttered businesses nationwide have turned to their insurers to help recoup their losses following state-mandate closures, which combined may exceed $300 billion a month. But insurers have widely rejected the claims, so the Billy Goat joined a growing line of businesses, including barbershops and casinos, suing insurers to force them to pay.
