"Shonda always wanted to be a journalist and never found the door to private companies, so, Being the Ponder she is, she built her own door, had a set of keys made so door could open both directions, and handed the keys to the public and said come in and feel welcome and warm, for God visits often. The law protects here, and I am here to hear your demands. PROUD OF MY LITTLE GIRL

Harris, Colleagues Urge Senate to Protect COVID-19 Relief Funds from Predatory For-Profit College Industry

Source: Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA)

April 21, 2020

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Tuesday joined Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and 14 of their Senate colleagues in urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL), and Senate Appropriations Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), to explicitly direct any additional emergency funding specifically for institutions of higher education to public and private, nonprofit institutions.  In a letter to the Senate Leaders and Senate Appropriations Committee Chairmen, the senators cited past efforts during times of economic crisis by the for-profit college industry to lure students – often low income, veterans, and students of color – with false or misleading promises to get them to enroll and take on massive debt for an education that was worthless. The Senators urged additional support to students, states, and public and private, nonprofit colleges and universities in future recovery packages.

Harder, Van Drew Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Help Farmers, Kids in Need During Coronavirus

Source: U.S. Representative Josh Harder (D-CA, 10th)

April 21, 2020

Representatives Josh Harder (CA-10) and Jeff Van Drew (NJ-02) introduced the Fresh Produce for Kids in Need Act to help farmers get their produce to kids in need during the Coronavirus crisis. The bill would suspend a bureaucratic requirement that prevents parents from picking up fresh produce from elementary schools on behalf of their children. Students typically get access to the free fruits and vegetables at school through a federal program. Since schools are closed, parents of kids enrolled in the program are allowed to pick up fresh produce, but their children must be in attendance. This extra bureaucratic requirement makes it harder for parents to get the produce on the way home from work and risks exposing children to the Coronavirus.

Hagedorn Statement on Pork Plant Closure in Worthington

Source: U.S. Representative Jim Hagedorn (R-MN, 1st)

April 21, 2020

"Our southern Minnesota congressional district is home to millions of hogs, thousands of livestock farmers, hundreds of modern hog farm operations and many name brand processing companies. I am worried about livestock farmers in southern Minnesota and throughout the nation. Prices are falling to historic lows and plant closures are creating excess supply of hogs with no market."

Why is this? It makes no sense that the livestock is not moving. I go to Wal-mart and there is hardly any meat in stock. People still eat. What is causing this?

“I’m glad we were able to pass additional funding to help North Carolina’s small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program. It should have never taken this long. Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer halted this program for a week in order to play partisan political games resulting in extra unnecessary hardship and uncertainty for small business owners across the state and country. This cannot happen again. Congress will likely need to allocate additional funds to this program and make improvements based on feedback we have heard from small businesses and non-profits. I’m committed to putting the health and jobs of North Carolinians first, and we cannot allow partisan politics to get in the way of assisting the American people during this global crisis.” -- Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), April 21,2020

“I supported the CARES Act to create the PPP to help businesses continue to pay employees and certain business expenses. The PPP is designed to keep businesses open – but sadly, businesses can no longer access the program until funds are replenished. I urge my colleagues to pass emergency additional funding for the PPP so more Second District businesses can benefit from this critical program.” -- U.S. Representative Brett S. Guthrie (R-KY, 2nd), April 17, 2020

10 Laura Ingalls Wilder Lessons Helping Me Cope with Coronavirus Quarantine

Source: Barb Mayes Boustead

April 17, 2020

Our small family is on lockdown until the threat of Coronavirus wanes, as are most families across the country. As stereotypical modern suburbanites, we don’t exactly flex our homemaking skills as part of our daily routine. We cook our own dinner most nights, but we don’t grow our own produce. I tried to grow basil last year, but only because I wanted fresh basil and the store was sold out of all versions except the plant. It leafed for a few months before it gave up. I can serviceably hand-sew, but I’ve never once taken my shiny Singer sewing machine out of the box. I don’t crochet or knit or quilt, and my husband doesn’t tinker or build. We did assemble a gas grill together, though, and managed to not explode.

Not Desperate

I love it when old boyfriends decide to come around to see if it's safe to try to come back into my life to use me some more. They tend to get mad when they find out I don't need them anymore. April 19 is the original Patriot's Day. It was hijacked by George Bush in 2001 to be observed on September 11 after the terrorist attacks in New York. But, to many American Patriots, April 19 will always be Patriot's Day, as it commemorates the first day of the American Revolution.

April 19 has a history of notable events to commemorate it:

In 1775: The American Revolutionary War begins with an American victory in Concord

In 1861: The Baltimore Riot

In 1961: Cuba Bay of Pigs

In 1971: Charles Manson was sentenced to death (this sentence was later commuted to a life sentence).

In 1993: The Waco Massacre

In 1995: The Oklahoma City Bombing

In 2013: Tamerland Tsarnaev one of the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects is killed in a shootout with police.
